Tell us about yourself and what you do!
I am so proud to be a Certified Master Kitchen and Bath Designer (CMKBD) and the Owner of Bee Studios, a custom residential kitchen, bath, interior design studio. I’ve been working in this industry since 2004 and have been self-employed since 2015. I hold a Bachelor Degree in Fine Arts from Ringling College of Art of Design.
My formal training includes computer animation and sculpture and my artistic passions include: painting, pottery, jewelry design, concrete, sculpture, and graphic design. I love focusing on the details and getting creative to give my clients designs that are cohesive, colorful, and artfully curated.
How did your business begin?
My business began in February of 2015 when I decided it was time to "take the plunge". I knew I had hit a ceiling working for others and I was ready to spread my wings. I didn't know if I would be a success, I just knew I would go crazy if I didn't try. I hit the ground running and have never looked back. I read this quote by Suzy Kassem once: "Doubt kills more dreams than failure ever will". We must be fearless when it comes to living our lives!
What’s 1 challenge you’ve faced and 1 success you’ve had since you’ve created your business?
The biggest challenge was my business began as a partnership. It was really hard to recognize that it wasn't working and to make changes in order to keep my dream alive. My biggest success has been earning my CMKBD certification last year, which has been a lifelong career dream of mine!
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received and has it come in handy for you?
The best piece of advice came from my father, a wonderful businessman and entrepreneur. I remember interviewing him in 2014 about wanting to launch my business and asked his best advice. He said "be open to change, nothing you do will happen just as you imagine it, and as long as you are willing to adapt and change you will be OK." So true! When I started, I was working out of my spare bedroom and now I have a successful design studio on Central Avenue in St.Pete with no sign of slowing down. I am loving the ride!
When are you at your happiest?
I am at my happiest when my folders are neatly filed, books are organized, projects caught up, and I can be creative. I am slightly OCD, so it makes me happy when everything has a binder and all is functioning as it should. A well-oiled machine.
What do you tell yourself when things get difficult?
Things get difficult a lot, because I am orchestrating remodels and nothing in remodeling goes exactly as planned. I have learned to talk about that more with clients. The ability as a professional to adapt and troubleshoot is so crucial. I do this everyday, so I have learned it's just part of the job.
What are you grateful for?
I am most grateful to my family for always believing in me. First to my parents for fostering my creativity as a child, allowing me to choose an Art college, and supporting me financially through school. I am grateful to my loving husband who didn't bat an eye when I told him I wanted to start a business. Without their support, I don't think I would be where I am today.
What’s 1 personal goal and 1 business goal you plan to accomplish this year?
My personal goal— that's a hard one! I think setting boundaries of personal and work life. Even though I am self-employed, I turn my phone off at the end of the day. It’s a hard habit in the beginning, but now that I’m used to it, I love my personal time. My business goal is to be published in a national magazine.
Where can you be found on a Tuesday afternoon?
Probably at the studio working or at a job site.
Where can we find you on a Friday evening?
Home with my hubby and puppy.
Where can you be found on a Sunday morning?
We love brunch; Trip’s Diner is a fave!
